Here’s How to Build a Tall, Modern Porch Planter

Whether they’re framing either side of a front door or spaced around a back deck, tall planters add a modern touch to their environment. These ones, with simple lines and stained with BeautiTone’s 2022 Exterior Colour of the Year, Ebony, are an easy weekend project that will instantly bring style to your outside space.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Mitre Saw or Circular Saw
  • Brad Nailer
  • Measuring Tape
  • Drill
  • Paint Brush
  • (36) 42" Pressure Treated Balusters
  • (1) 2x4x12’ Pressure Treated Wood
  • 2" Brad Nails
  • 2.5" Exterior Screws
  • Exterior Wood Glue
  • Beautitine Wood Shield Stain

Here’s How

Start by building the three square frames that the balusters will attach to. Cut the 2x4x12’ into six 9” lengths and six 12” lengths. Make a square from two of the 9” pieces and two of the 12” pieces, then sink a pair of screws 3/4” in from the end of each to attach them all together. Repeat to create two more squares.

Cut 1” off either end of each baluster, removing the bevelled edges.

Place one of the the balusters on a flat surface and stand each of the square frames at either end and one in the middle. Apply wood glue where the frame touches the baluster and connect them with a 2” brad nail. Apply glue along the side of the baluster where you’ll stack the next, as well as a couple inches further up each frame, and place another baluster on top before nailing that baluster to the one below and into the each frame.

Repeat the above step for each new baluster until you’ve completely encircled the frame.

Take the remaining piece of 2x4, cut it down to 12” and then cut in half lengthwise to create two pieces measuringly approximately 12”x 1.75”. Space them out equally on top of the middle frame, inside the planter, and nail/screw down to create a plaform with which your potted plant can sit on.

Apply two thin coats of BeautiTone Wood-Sheild ‘Ebony’ stain, available in solid or semi-transparent, and allow to dry. Now move your new planter into place and add your favourite plant or arrangement for an instant outdoor upgrade!
